Plastik

The core of sustainability

The PLASTIK Group is an important manufacturing company that operates internationally in the production of films and bags for the hygienic-sanitary sector and technical films for sectors specific.

The high level of competence, gained over 50 years of experience, makes the PLASTIK Group a reference company for the main operators in the sanitary sector. The PLASTIK Group has always been a solid family-run company which today can count on the experience and professionalism of 240 employees.

Continuous innovation in sustainable solutions has led the group to focus production on three production sites (including one in Tunisia) and an aggregate turnover of approximately 80 million euros. The ability to offer solutions and products worthy of a constantly evolving market makes PLASTIK a reliable partner for the present and the future of its customers.

The global challenges

The great global challenges

Therapeutic
Adherence

Non-therapeutic adherence with medical prescriptions is the main cause of uneffective treatment and healthcare costs.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), adherence to chronic therapies in developed countries does not exceed 50%. The effects of non-adherence to therapy are dreadful, just think that in Europe alone this problem causes 194,500 deaths and €125 billion costs for increased hospitalisation every year.

When it comes to Italy, only half of the almost 8 million patients with chronic diseases take their medicines correctly, as the report on “The use of medicines in Italy” shows (source: OSMED – National Observatory on the Use of Medicines). Such scenario represents a serious harm for patients, but also impact the sustainability of the National Health Services.

As part of R&D, MatCare push efforts on the development of “intelligent packaging” which provides support in enhancing therapeutic adherence through a hybrid “real & digital” system (R&D Pack) which is easily accessible to patients and caregivers.

Why a hybrid service? It allows broader accessibility with the possibility of combining the perspectives of both patient (frequently older and with more difficulties with digital tools) and caregiver (generally closer to the digital world).

Drug
Copy

The counterfeiting of medicines impact on about 10% of the world pharmaceutical market.

Among the most frequently falsified drugs, in industrialised countries, there are the so-called lifestyle-saving drugs (such as those against erectile dysfunction, but also steroid hormones and psychotropic drugs), used to improve lifestyle and sold through unauthorised sales channels. This causes great economic lost, but the impact that not original products can have on people’s health is even greater.

In order to fight against this phenomenon and protect patients and the market, MatCare has invested in a digital technology that allows easy and immediate monitoring of any potential counterfeiting. This new technology applied to the primary and secondary package of pharmaceutical products can be offered to the different actors in the pharmaceutical supply chain, with a ‘friendly-use’ philosophy suitable for each of them: from manufacturing companies to wholesalers, to pharmacists up to the final patient.

Lifestyle Education
and Prevention

In recent decades, citizens have been playing an increasingly active role in healthcare decision-making processes regarding the management of their diseases. This cultural scenario is part of a major trend, called the ageing of the population, which goes in parallel with an increase in chronic diseases and comorbidities. These last are the main cause of the deaths of 40 million people every year.

What are the most important risks for chronic diseases? An unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and tobacco consumption.

Thanks to a hybrid “real & digital” communication system (R&D Pack), MatCare can support lifestyle education (diet and physical activity) which is a key element that converges with pharmacological therapy, especially for chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, etc.) that account for more than 75% of pharmaceutical consumption and expenditure.

Within an intelligent pack, the patient can find lifestyle indications that help primary and secondary prevention.

Sustainability
and Innovative Materials

The challenge of making a contribution to the planet, the pharmaceutical sector has some responsibilities for large quantities of materials produced every year.

In fact, sources show that primary pharmaceutical packaging is essentially centred on three materials: aluminium (circa 60%), glass (circa 20%) and plastic (circa 20%). Primary and secondary packaging amounts to about 90 ton per year: this is a major challenge for the disposal of this waste, particularly for plastic and aluminium.

This is the core mission of MatCare’s expertise in developing new green and sustainable high-performance materials.

Through a strong process of research and development, we have realised materials that guarantee recyclable materials for high environmental sustainability, blister pack without aluminium from and  same performance in terms of quality and safety standards required by the pharmaceutical sector, as standard products.

About Us

MatCare is an innovative start-up that is engaged in the development of smart and environmentally friendly innovative materials focus on medical/pharma fields looking at innovative solutions for important unmet needs.

We invest in R&D on innovative materials and digital technology for drug therapy, in order to make a contribution to the great global challenges that are still to be met (such as adherence to therapy, drug copies, education in primary and secondary prevention). We focus on the sustainability of our planet through the scouting and adding recyclable materials for primary and secondary pharmaceutical packaging.

We aim to be a “laboratory” that prototypes business models in innovative ways.

But what models?

It’s TRL3 prototypes, or rather “experimental proof of concept”. The purpose of TRL 3 is to verify technology and concept work, starting from research and development on materials, components or processes that have are not integrated yet and to finalize with validation and patent. We innovate the state of the art of packaging, creating products, services, and experiences to support the pharma world. Inspired by the paradigms of inbound open innovation, we are committed to major global challenges by proposing a platform of sustainable and fully recyclable packages, skilfully combining digital solutions, eco-design, and smart packaging to improve the overall performance of the supply chain.

Our keywords?
Sustainability, Care, Attention, Innovation and Research.

Mat /

Products made of innovative, smart, sustainable and recyclable materials to reduce environmental impact during both recycling and manufacturing.

/ Care

Care and attention for people and environment through digital platforms and innovation, in order to improve people’s lives in a smart, sustainable and digital way.

Vision

We are an innovation lab aimed to inspire new business models. We invest in R&D on materials and digital technology to support medical therapy, focusing on sustainable and recyclable materials, with digital platforms designed to improve people’s lives in a smart and sustainable way.

Mission

We develop TRL3 prototypes, that is “experimental proof of concept”, creating new solutions in the state of the art of packaging and making products, services and experiences to support the pharma world. We address major global challenges – adherence of therapy, drug copy issue, need in primary and secondary prevention and sustainability – by skilfully using digital solutions, eco-design, and smart packaging to improve the overall performance of the supply chain.

Sustainability

The challenge of making a contribution to our planet in terms of sustainability is impacting also concerns the pharmaceutical sector in a significant way, as it produces large quantities of wasted materials every year. We are therefore committed to use new green and high-performance materials. In particular, after a long process of research and development with a mixed ‘in-house’ and open-innovation model, we can identify materials that ensure high environmental sustainability with recyclable components and guaranteed performance with respect to the quality and safety standards required by the pharmaceutical sector.
